About App Studio

App Studio is a free web app that reveals the hidden story behind your photos. Every photo taken on a phone or camera carries invisible EXIF metadata — the exact date and time it was taken, and often the precise GPS location. App Studio reads that metadata directly in your browser and displays it in a clear, readable format.

What App Studio shows you

When — the exact date and time the photo was captured, pulled straight from the camera's own timestamp.
Where — the GPS coordinates embedded in the photo, reverse-geocoded into a readable place name and map link.
AI Description — an optional AI-generated analysis of the photo's location, background, landmarks, and cultural context, powered by a vision language model.

Who this is for

Travelers organizing trip photos, families digitizing old albums, journalists verifying image origin, and anyone curious about when and where a picture was really taken.

Supported photo formats

App Studio works with standard JPEG photos as well as HEIC/HEIF images from iPhone. Screenshots and images shared through messaging apps often have their metadata stripped by the platform, so results may vary for those.

How it works

All metadata extraction happens locally in your browser using JavaScript — your photo is never uploaded to a server for the When/Where features. Only if you choose to use the optional AI Description feature is a resized copy of the photo sent to a third-party AI vision model for analysis. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
